Florida Trail Association = Fun & Adventure!

Ocala National Forest

From Juniper Springs, it's approximately a five mile hike
via the Florida Trail through the Juniper Prairie Wilderness to
the Hidden Pond primitive campsite.

And the hike begins . . .
Entering the Juniper Prairie Wilderness of Ocala National Park.

Birding at Mead Gardens

October is an excellent month for warbler sighting
at Mead Gardens.  On a recent visit with the Orange Audubon Society, we spied yellow-throated warblers, black and white warblers, palm warblers, redstarts, and vireos.

Birders!

Spooky's Black Cat Cafe & Lounge

Earlier this month, I had a premonition that my "crazy cat lady" mother would be visiting.  Okay, it was a phone call.    Anyway, I knew I had to take my "crazy cat lady" mother to Spooky's Black Cat Cafe & Lounge.  Of course, she loved it!  The cafe's atmosphere is unusual and fun with a combination of otherworldly local artwork and Halloween decor. Our dinner was highlighted by the dragon eggs that sparked with wasabi and the Keylime Coconut Cake (by Donna) - heavenly.

Yep, that's my "crazy cat lady" mother.  =)

You don't need a crystal ball to foresee that Spooky's Black Cat Cafe & Lounge will be quite lively this Halloween serving treats, brews, and fun.

The Queen of Versailles and Crepes

Now playing at the Enzian Theatre, "The Queen of Versailles" is a documentary about billionaire time-share tycoon David Siegel and his wife, Jackie.  The movie begins when the Siegels are at the height of their lifestyle of "new money" excess and building the obnoxiously immense and opulent home modeled after Versailles, and follows them through their "struggles" following the 2008 financial bust and subsequent recession.    It's difficult to sympathize with David Siegel.  A special treat, Jackie Siegel welcomed the audience and introduced the movie.  In person and on the big screen, she seems friendly, approachable, and genuine.  The audience snickered when she mentioned that the movie may be nominated for an Oscar; however, at its conclusion, I have to agree, "The Queen of Versailles" is worthy of a nomination.

Audubon's Center for Birds of Prey

Located in Maitland, Florida is a sanctuary for raptors.  Injured or orphaned birds of prey are brought to the center to be cared for by avian experts.  Once rehabilitated, the birds are set free.

Audubon of Florida's Mission:  To conserve, protect, and restore Florida's natural resources and to create a conservation ethic among all Floridians.
On our recent visit, we saw eagles, falcons, hawks, peregrines, and my favorite - owls!  Beautiful barred owls, gorgeous barn owls, and adorable screech owls were the highlights for me.  This extraordinary sanctuary is a perfect escape to enjoy a peaceful, yet fascinating afternoon.

I Hope They Put His Ashes in a Campbell's Soup Can

Ray Bradbury was a master story-teller with a boundless, magical imagination.  I especially love his poetic style of description.  One of my favorite quotes that struck me by its simple and lovely imagery is from a favorite book, The Halloween Tree, "Suddenly the day is gone, and night came out from under each tree and spread."  I loved that line the first moment I read it.

Long before tattos were commonplace and still gawk-worthy, there was the trippy movie, "The Illustrated Man" based on a collection of Ray Bradbury stories.  When I saw this movie as a kid, I was totally creeped out by the naked guy covered in tattos.

" . . . for he was a riot of rockets and fountains and people, in such intricate detail and color that you could hear the voices murmuring small and muted, from the crowds that inhabited his body. When his flesh twitched, the tiny mouths flickered, the tiny green-and-gold eyes winked, the tiny pink hands gestured. There were yellow meadows and blue rivers and mountains and stars and suns and planets spread in a Milky Way across his chest. The people themselves were in twenty or more odd groups upon his arms, shoulders, back, sides, and wrists, as well as on the flat of his stomach. You found them in forests of hair, lurking among a constellation of freckles, or peering from armpit caverns, diamond eyes aglitter." - excerpt from The Illustrated Man.

"I want to be buried on Mars. I don't want to be the first live person to arrive there. It'll be too late. But I want to be the first dead person that gets there. I want to arrive in a Campbell's soup can. Bury me on Mars in [the] thing called the Bradbury Abyss. They gotta name a place on Mars for me, and I will welcome that." ~ Ray Bradbury

I hope he gets his wish.

Holy Owl!

While strolling through my neighborhood this evening, my heart screeched with joy when I spotted this little fellow.

Monday, March 19, 2012

I have escaped his power . . .

As I was  staring into his eyes, a dust particle caused me to blink and the spell was broken.  As easy as that, my mind is my own again.  And, um, excuse me, I must get him a treat and scratch his belly . . .

Flamenco at the Arsht Center in Miami

This weekend I took my mother to a flamenco show in Miami.  It was magnificent.  The lighting, costumes, and music were beautiful; the dancing was exciting, passionate, and breathtaking.  After the show, my mother said she understands why I love flamenco so much.
Here's a clip of what we experienced:

Künefe and Shame

Sunday evening, I had dinner at Bosphorous in Winter Park.  Another yummy adventure in turkish cuisine. My dinner was a wonderful poof of lavas with hummus and haydir.  I ended my meal with künefe, a delightful dessert made from shredded cracked wheat, cheese, pistachio nuts and a simple honey syrup.
This wonderful dinner was followed by a very disturbing movie - Shame.  A very good movie that I did not like.  It's an extremely intense movie about sexual addiction.  The story centers around a brother and sister that are emotionally crippled by a shameful past and trapped by  their subsequent addictions and co-dependencies.  "Shame" does not allow the viewer to peek behind the curtain; instead, the audience is thrust into very intimate scenes.  With unavoidable vulnerability, the actors, Michael  Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, delivered tour de force performances.  "Shame" is a movie worth seeing, but it's not for the faint-hearted.

Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys

Last week, Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys came to town.  The small size of the crowd did not dampen the band's enthusiasm.  True professionals, they performed a very entertaining show of superior honky-tonk rockabilly.

4Rivers Smokehouse BBQ

I love BBQ!  Danny B and I had lunch at Four Rivers Smokehouse.
It was real good.
When we arrived, there was the everyday 20+ lunch customer line.  The line never shortened; instead, when we left I counted 26 customers in line - a true testament to this tasty bbq.  For lunch, I had bbq pulled chicken and bbq brisket (no bun) with bbq baked beans and sweet potatoe casserole - delicious!  I so wanted to have dessert, but I just couldn't do it - I was too bbq full.

Sunday Morning Pancakes

Lately, I've been trying to control my "white" habit by minimizing sugar, flour and potatoes in my daily diet.  Today I made almond flour pancakes. They were easy to make and delicious to eat.

 Almond Flour Pancakes
1 Cup Almond Flour
1/4 Cup Water (I used Almond Milk)
2 Eggs
2 Tbsps Oil
1 Tbsp Sweetner (I used Vanilla Stevia)
1/4 Tsp Salt
Mix in a bowl, cook in a pan.

lovely almond flour pancakes and tupelo honey

Leah and Her Hens

Recently, I spent a fun afternoon hanging out with my pal, Leah.  She introduced me to her five hens:  Betty, Cleopatra, Daphne, Esporanza, and Henny Penny?
Check out this Barbie Dream Hen House. Not only do Leah's hens provide her a daily supply of deliciously nutritious cackleberries, but Leah claims they keep her yard bug-free.
Lovely Leah, Lane, her fantastic brother and Rico Suave.
Leah and I cruised around downtown Sanford on her motor-scooters.  At first, I was scared, but quickly became comfortable with zipping around.  It was a blast!  That evening, Rico Suave made a delicious dinner of chicken, plaintains and spanish rice.  The day was so enjoyable:  excellent company, good conversation, adventure and delicious food.

Discovered Jimmy Dumps / Sunny Jimmy

So, I was surfing the net to see if things are getting better; and yes, I found a new favorite blog.  My favorites are listed to the right and I just added Jimmy Dumps/Sunny Jimmy.  I enjoy the writing of this insightful blogger.

How It All Went Down

You are surfing around the web looking to see if things are getting better, or if things are getting worse.  You find evidence that things are getting better, and things are getting worse.  And things are the same too, or if not the same, there is this appearance of sameness that is probably a false appearance, because nothing is ever the same, even that happy innocuous sameness that sort of floods your senses.

And you remember that there was probably laughter and light in the Dark Ages.  And there were parties too.  And maybe the ages were dark, but there were those who were dazzled by the light of the stars, and there were people who were happy, and inspired, and had great sex, and they didn't really know they were living in the dark ages.  And well, that's probably how it goes.  You live in an age, and you don't even know the character of the age you are living in.  You live, you toil, you party.  And you leave it to others to remember how it all went down.                                                                                                                 ~ Jimmy Dumps / Sunny Jimmy

I really like the post, "Clearing."  Check it out and say Amen!
